Don and Alta Warren celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary May 30, 2015, at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Mount Airy. Don’s 95th birthday was also celebrated. During their 75 years of marriage, Don sold his business and he and Alta moved to Vong Tau, Vietnam where they spent the next seven years as Mom and Pop to servicemen.
While there, they built a church and orphanage. Alta cooked three meals a day for the servicemen as well as helping at the orphanage. Don kept busy, with the help of servicemen, building the church and orphanage. During the seven years, they brought 276 GI orphans to America to be adopted into homes. One of the servicemen, Jim Bloom, wrote a book about Don and Alta titled, “Tithe of Their Lives.”
A couple of the orphans were able to attend the reception as well as one Vietnamese family who came over with them. Many other friends and family members also attended. Don and Alta have been blessed to meet several of the orphans now as adults and some of the servicemen who were stationed in Vietnam. This has blessed them beyond words.
When asked what kept their marriage for so many years, their answer is, “their relationship with Jesus Christ.” They have faithfully attended church and been involved in ministry to this day.
