CARY — The state 1A tennis tournament begins today at Cary Tennis Park with several area players in the field.
Elkin has one doubles team and one singles player in the quarterfinals, and East Wilkes has one singles player.
From the Northwest Conference, Bishop McGuinness has a doubles team in the quarterfinals.
Elkin senior Ryan Schell hit a bump in the road in his quest for a third-straight state title.
Schell won the state 1A doubles title in 2013 and won the singles title last year. At the regional tournament in Elkin on Saturday, however, he and partner Chad Vestal lost in the semifinals to Pine Lake Prep.
The Elks bounced back to beat Bishop’s Zach Jones and Jonathan Ingram in the third-place match.
After Elkin knocked Mount Airy’s Justin Leonard and Jack Marion out of the playoffs, coach Tony Duncan said Schell and Vestal hadn’t played many matches as a pair this season, but had a lot of experience overall.
After that semifinal loss, Duncan said the duo made too many unforced errors, and that he would work with them on that aspect this week.
As the third seeds, Schell and Vestal will face the second seeds from the East. Bishop is the fourth seed, taking on the East’s top seed.
For Vestal, defeating Jones in the third-place match Saturday must have had some measure of vengeance. Jones and Sam McLaughry beat Vestal and David Bullin in the championship round last season.
In singles, the story is similar to doubles in that Elkin’s Ryan Macy lost in the semifinals (to a Pine Lake Prep player), but bounced back with a win in third-place match against an area player.
Macy fell to Pine Lake’s Max Vicario, but then beat East Wilkes’ Dillon Shew.
Macy will face the second seed from the East, and Shew gets the top seed from the East.
