MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Edward Hugh Spencer, 77, of 238 Sherry Drive, Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 23, 2012, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Spencer was born July 28, 1935, in Randolph County, W.Va., the son of the late Edward and Cora Marsh Spencer. He was affectionately known as “Bud” to his family, friends, and neighbors. Bud was the manager of Neighbors Stores Inc. at the corner of South and Pine streets for nearly 10 years and later retired as a maintenance mechanic from Cross Creek Apparel. Mr. Spencer was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. He is survived by a daughter, Janna Lee Macheca of East Liverpool, Ohio; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Allen Spencer of Syracuse, N.Y., and James Edward and Amy Spencer of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Edith Mae Delauder of Salem, Va.; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece and her husband, Jean and Charles Morgan of Mount Airy, with whom he resided. In addition to his parents, Mr. Spencer was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Athey, Alice Norman and Lorraine Seamen; and three brothers, Junior Thornhill, Davis Thornhill and Willis “Moe” Thornhill. The funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant View Baptist Church, with the Rev. Josh Sechrist officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.
