Despite a drier-than-normal February, total precipitation was 86.6 percent higher than usual in Mount Airy for the first two months of the year.

As of Feb. 28, Mount Airy’s output for 2013 stood at 12.63 inches, according to a monthly report from F.G. Doggett Water Plant, the city’s official weather-monitoring station.

That’s 5.86 inches, or 86.6 percent, above Mount Airy’s average precipitation for the first two months of the year, which includes an all-time record for the city being set in January.

This area received 2.70 inches in February, when the monthly average is 3.37 inches.

Measurable precipitation fell on 13 days last month, and as of Feb. 28, local residents had seen that on 29 of the 59 days so far this year. Last month’s total included 0.05 inches of snow recorded for Feb. 22. The maximum precipitation for one day was 1.25 inches measured on Feb. 27.

February had five days with frost and none with fog.

The high temperature last month was 61 degrees, noted on Feb. 7, with the month’s low reading of 14 occurring on both Feb. 19 and 20.

Colder-than-normal conditions prevailed in February, when the mercury averaged 37.8 degrees compared to the usual reading of 40.2 for the second month of the year.

Weather records have been kept here since 1924.
