The Modern Gardeners Garden Club of Mount Airy is holding a luncheon to help raise money Daniel Boone Native Gardens, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The money raised will be used to buy more native plants.
The Garden features a collection of North Carolina native plants in a casual and natural setting, providing education, as well as preservation, of native species. A direct descendant of Daniel Boone, the sixth Daniel Boone, made the wrought iron entrance gates. The fern garden was added in 1974. The most recent addition to the garden was made in 1992 with the addition of the bog.
The luncheon will start with a welcome from the president of the Modern Gardeners, a greeting from Deborah Cochran, mayor of Mount Airy, followed with a blessing from Linda Kniskern, the vice director of the Garden Club of North Carolina.
The luncheon, catered by Sue Cook, a professional caterer and former home economics teacher, as well as on the board of Daniel Boone Native Gardens and the local Modern Gardeners Garden Club, will follow next. The menu will include: homemade chicken salad, cheesecake bars, shamrock sugar cookies dipped in chocolate, marinated mixed vegetables, almondine green beans, and a fruit bowl.
Original flower arrangements, created by the members of the Modern Gardeners, will adorn the tables.
Next, Mimi Patterson, the director of the Garden Club of North Carolina, will introduce the day’s speaker: Rebecca Kaenzig, the chairman of the board of governors for the Daniel Boone Native Gardens. Juanita Daber, past president of the Garden Club of North Carolina, will conclude the event with some annoucements.
Cook is hoping at least 100 guests will come to enjoy the luncheon, and help raise money for the Daniel Boone Native Gardens at the same time.
