MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Gertrude Frances Jessup Puckett, 96, a beloved mother and grandmother, formerly of 830 Ridgecrest Drive, Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday March 6, 2013, at the Skilled Nursing Facility at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Mrs. Puckett was born March 20, 1916, in Patrick County, Va., to the late John Haze and Georgia Savannah Childress Jessup. Mrs. Puckett was retired from the Mount Airy Police Department after 15 years of service, was the secretary of the N.C. Police Women’s Association and was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law Roger and Kaye Puckett of Mount Airy, Dr. James D Puckett and wife Vicki of Isle of Palms, S.C., and Richard G. Puckett of Port St. Lucie, Fla. Six grandchildren and spouses, Derrick and Sherri Puckett of Winston Salem, Kristi Puckett and friend Jerry Coram, Jr. of Mount Airy, Grant and Robyn Puckett of King, James D Puckett Jr. and wife Megan of Greenville, S.C., Meredith Puckett of Greenville, S.C. and Dr. Andrea Kittrell and husband Dr. Bill Kittrell of Lynchburg, Va., 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Puckett was preceded in death by her husband H. Vermont Puckett, two sisters Eunice Jessup and Lola McMillian and by two brothers Glenn Jessup and Wayne Jessup. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 12 p.m,. at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with services conducted by Rev. Buford Jessup with entombment in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. until time for the service.
