The Lady Bears overcame East Wilkes and Mother Nature for a 5-2 soccer win Wednesday night.
Strong gusts of wind combined with a temperature around 40 degrees for a frigid wind-chill factor.
The wind was blowing hard all game from the direction of the ballfields, making the north goal a veritable fortress.
In the first half, Mount Airy attacked the north goal and struggled just to move the ball up the field. Passes were slowed and easy to intercept. Shot attempts were blown offline.
In the 19th minute, the Bears had the ball stolen near midfield. The Cards moved down the field and scored the first point of the game.
Only three and a half minutes later, the Bears answered. Freshman Jessica Miranda took a pass up the right sideline and dribbled into the box.
She shot, but the keeper came out and smothered the attempt. The ball popped up in the air, and Bear Andi Moore swooped in to finish the play for a 1-1 tie.
With six minutes left in the first half, East Wilkes broke through with a second goal on freshman keeper Ailia Halpern.
The Cards held that 2-1 lead into the break.
Coach Will Hurley reminded his team that they would have the wind at their backs in the second half and to consider how the wind would affect the ball when making passes.
The senior Moore made all four goals in the second half as the Bears took advantage of the conditions.
Miranda had assists on two of those four goals. She continues to play well, said Hurley.
The coach noted the hard work of his captains: Moore, Vanessa Armenta and Beasley Nester. He also complimented Maria Rodriguez and Jessica Escutia.
Halpern made seven good saves on defense in helping the Bears improve to 4-0.
The Bears next travel to Thomasville on Friday.
