SPARTA — Maynard Smith “Don” Nester, 81, of 68 Center St., Sparta, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at his residence. He was born May 13, 1931, in Surry County to the late Benton Ashby and Sadie Lowe Nester. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother, James Nester. Don fought many battles with cancer. His faith in the Lord sustained him through his illnesses. He was a member of New Haven Church of the Brethren and was very active in the choir, Bible study, Sunday school and other activities. He served his country in the Navy during the Korean War. Don was very active in many veterans organizations in Lancaster, Ohio, where he resided for more than 50 years. He was an avid golfer and believed in exercising to stay physically fit. Don and Lib moved back home to our North Carolina mountains in 2006. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth McCann Nester of the home; three sons, David Nester and wife Pat of White Hall, Mont., Stephen Nester and wife Lisa of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Jonathan Scott Nester and wife Colette of Sparta; three grandsons, Jason Nester and wife Jaquelyn of San Diego, Calif., Taylor Nester of Sparta and Matthew Nester of Sparta; two great-grandsons, Jett Pinkerton and John D. Pinkerton; two sisters, Doris Adams and husband Clayton of Laurinburg and Betty Badgett and husband Jack of North Wilkesboro; and several nieces and nephews also survive. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. The family requests no flowers, and memorials may be made to Medi-Home Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287, Sparta, NC 28675. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta is serving the Nester family.
