DOBSON — It took the Lady Eagles more than an hour to score, but then Surry Central converted three times in the last 15 minutes for a 3-1 win over East Surry.
The two conference rivals battled to a scoreless tie at halftime.
The scoreboard remained the same until midway through the second period.
Returning all-conference keeper Chandler Musson kept the Eagles’ net clear, while senior newcomer Beth Johnson did the same for East.
In the 60th minute, East Surry sent a corner kick toward the goal amid a cluster of bodies. The ball appeared to be knocked into the goal by East’s returning all-conference player Panayiota Boutis.
“East Surry played tough,” said Central Coach Matt Richardson. “They always give a great effort against us. I feel like they outworked us at times. It took them to score to wake us up a little bit.”
In the 65th minute, Central’s Tess Dockery went down in the box, and teammate Sarah Bruce took the penalty kick. She sent the ball low and outside into the netting for a 1-1 tie.
About four minutes later, Central took its first lead as Emilee Stanley cleaned up the trash around the box, according to Richardson. The ball rolled her direction, and she sent it in, he said.
With about six minutes left, the Eagles got an insurance goal from Dockery.
Richardson said he believed it was Bruce who sent a pass toward the goal, and Dockery headed the ball in for a 3-1 lead.
Hopefully this gets the players’ attention, the coach said. They should realize that they have to compete a little harder from the outset and capitalize on chances.
The full team has only had one practice together, so there’s still a lot of things to work on, he said. However, he added, “to come from behind against a conference foe that played as hard as East Surry did, we’ll take it.”
Surry Central (2-0) is scheduled to host Starmount today, weather permitting. East Surry (1-1) is set to go to Lexington Friday to face Central Davidson.
