GREENSBORO — Three local wrestlers from the Northwest 1A/2A conference made it to the third- and fourth-place consolation round pairings on Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling Championships held in Greensboro.

In the consolation round, the time increments were one minute in the first round and two minutes in the following two consecutive rounds so there was less time to make comebacks.

In the 1A competition, East Surry’s Cody Gaskill cliched third place on Saturday after winning against Zach Faircloth of East Wilkes at the 195-pound weight class. Senior Gaskill came into the match with a 31-7 record against Faircloth’s 52-9. He pulled out the win 5-4.

In the 2A division, North Surry’s Austin McMillian cliched third place, winning 5-4 against David Niemitalo of Wheatmore at the 120-pound weight class. McMillian was tied 1-1 with 1:29 left to go in the third round and won after an escape move that landed McMillian a victory of 2-1.

Also, of North Surry, Austin Collins pulled out a fourth-place finish after narrowly losing the third-place battle to Lucas Smith of Piedmont. Collins was tied with Smith 3-3 in the second round but ran out of time after a Smith move that gave him the 5-4 victory.
