The Lady Bears picked up their second soccer win of the season, topping Thomasville 7-0.

For the second game in two days, Mount Airy needed a half to get going, then turned on the offense.

It’s nice to be a second-half team, said Coach Will Hurley, but the squad also needs to come out sharper at the first whistle.

This is a good, young group of kids, the coach said. However, like everyone else right now, the team needs some nice weather so it can hold practices.

Hurley spoke from his vehicle as he traveled to Kernersville to support the Lady Bears basketball team in the state 1A playoffs. The soccer game was moved up from 6 p.m. to 4 p.m. so that soccer players and fans could go to Bishop McGuinness.

In this game, Hurley said Thomasville bunched up the middle of the field at the start and made it hard to move the ball. Still, his team controlled possession much of the game and kept the ball on the other side of the field.

Rookie keeper Alia Halpern only had to make two saves as the defense kept the Lady Bulldogs away from the goal.

Abigail Pedraza scored the first goal of the game on a breakaway, then she later converted another goal off a scramble following a corner kick.

Marissa Petri scored off a penalty kick and also had an assist.

Captain Vanessa Armenta also had one goal and one assist.

“She and Marissa really had good games,” Hurley said of Armenta.

Her goal came off an amazing play where she took control of the ball down at Mount Airy’s own keeper box and dribbled her way through traffic to the other end.

Co-captain Beasley Nester also had an assist.

Freshman Jessica Miranda had her second good game, scoring two goals.

Late in the game, Hurley rotated defender Christy Beasley up to striker. Beasley scored her first high school goal, he said.

The Bears next host Atkins on Tuesday.
