• The Arts Council of the Twin Counties second winter concert in its series will be held at the Galax Public Library at 3 p.m. free of charge. It will feature a saxophone quartet from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

Feb. 26

• The Small Business Center of Surry Community College will offer a free seminar, “Keep Cash Flowing: Managing Your Accounts Receivable,” at the Elkin Center, 1461 N. Bridge St., Elkin. The seminar, presented by Kay Laffoon, will be from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. The Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce is co-sponsoring the event. • The Surry County Honors Chorus, composed of selected students from Surry County, Mount Airy City and Elkin City schools, will hold middle and high concerts at 7 p.m. in the Mount Airy High School auditorium. Feb. 28

• The Surry County Cooperative Extension will host a bus tour to the Southern Spring Home & Garden Show in Charlotte. The bus will leave from the Dobson First Baptist Church, 204 S. March 2

• The Pilot Mountain Ruritan Club will holds its biannual chicken stew, oyster stew and hot dog supper from 5 to 8 p.m. at Whitaker Chapel United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Cost is $8 for eat in or take out, with eat in being all-you-can-eat, or purchase a book of 10 tickets for $50. Proceeds benefit community projects and the Surry Community College Scholarship Fund.

• The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History will host a Batik egg workshop for adults from 1 to 4 p.m. in the museum classroom. Participants will be able to learn the ancient method of decorating Easter eggs using simple, primitive tools to “write” intricate designs in beeswax. Cost is $10 for museum members and $15 for nonmembers and will include supplies. The workshop is limited to 15 people ages 12 and older. Call 786-4478 by Feb. 15 to reserve a spot. There will be $20 prepaid take-home kits available for participants, which must be ordered when making reservations.

March 7

• Skating for Samantha’s Heart fundraiser will be held at the Starlite Skate Center in Mount Airy from 6 to 8 p.m. Entry fee is $5, which includes skate rental. All proceeds go directly to the family of Samantha Riggs, a 10-year-old who is awaiting a heart transplant at Duke Children’s Hospital. This fundraiser is hosted by the Cana Knights. • Copeland Ruritans will host a big country breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Copeland Ruritan Building. Menu includes country ham, sausage, gravy, biscuits, apples, eggs and grits. Eat-in cost is donations only, and take-outs cost $5.

• The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History will host History Talks: From Regulation to Revolution in Surry County with Dr. Cory Stewart of Surry Community College as speaker at 2 p.m. on the museum’s third floor. The event is free.

• A benefit dance is being held for Easter Seals at the Surry County Senior Center, Jones Family Resource Center, from 7 to 10 p.m. Diamond Jim and Country Classic will be performing. Cost of admission is $8 and refreshments will be available. Food Lion of Dobson is sponsoring the dance.

• The Destination FFA cattle sale sponsored by the North Surry and South Stokes Future Farmers of America chapters will be held at noon at Mount Airy Stockyards off Pine Ridge Road. It will be a registered and commercial cattle sale featuring breeding bulls, open heifers, bred gilts, bred heifers, feeder pigs, bred cows, breeding gilts, show prospects and cow/calf pairs. • The Surry County Genealogical Association will meet at 7 p.m. in the teaching auditorium at Surry Community College, Dobson. The speaker will be John Reynolds, who will speak on When Genealogy and DNA Collide. Reynolds is a member of the Forsyth County Genealogical Society. The meeting is free. • The Franklin Ruritan Club, N.C. 89 West, Toast, will host a spring pancake supper from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The menu will include buckwheat and regular pancakes as well as sausage gravy. March 16

• A hot dog benefit will be held for Susie Danley from noon to 6 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church to help with surgery expenses due to Danley not having insurance. Cost is $5 a plate.

• A reunion for students and teachers from St. Paul School will begin at noon at St. Paul School’s cafeteria in Cana, Va. Those attending are asked to bring two food items, such as a covered dish, a two-liter drink, or dessert for each person attending. Those attending also can bring pictures and yearbooks. • The 2013 Spring/Summer Super 75 Kidz Closet children’s consignment sale will be held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Mount Airy Wesleyan Church gym to raise funds for the Bannertown Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. For consignors only, a special preview sale will be held Thursday. Being sold will be gently used children’s spring and summer clothing, toys, baby equipment, kids furniture, maternity clothing and more. • A Longaberger basket and pottery bingo will be held at Veterans Memorial Park, 691 W. Lebanon St., Mount Airy, to raise funds for an educational trip to Niagara Falls, Canada, for the Mount Airy after-school children. • The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History will host its annual Easter Bonnet workshop, parade down Main Street and egg hunt at the Robert Smith Memorial Park from 10 a.m. to noon. • Maranatha Homeless Outreach, Extended Grace Outreach and God’s Helping Hands are coming together to raise funds for the homeless and needy of the community from 8 a.m. until at Veterans Park, West Lebanon Street. Cruise-In for Christ will host a car show, and grilled hamburgers and hot dogs will be for sale. There will be face painting, as well as a photographer to take family portraits for a price. May 4

Series events

• Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less programs will be held at Rockford Elementary School, Dobson, every Monday at 3:45 p.m. from now through April 29. The program fee is $10. Sponsored by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, the program will explore behaviors that help participants achieve and maintain a health weight, identify strategies to help participants eat smart and move more and show participants how living mindfully can help them achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

• The Arts Council of the Twin Counties, Galax, Va., will sponsor an exhibit of art inspired by Jack London’s “Call of the Wild.” The arts council will display anything inspired by the work or depicting the landscape and/or wildlife of the Blue Ridge Mountains from now through Feb. 24 at the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts. Visitors to the school will vote on their favorite work in two categories: artists 18 and under and artists 19 and above. Winners will be announced at a reception at the school on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.

• The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History is hosting Beginners Genealogy classes on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. from Feb. 12 through March 12. The course, taught by Esther Johnson, will be a five-part series designed for the individual who is interested in researching a family tree. The first two classes will be in the museum’s second floor classroom. The third class will be at the Surry County Register of Deeds office in Dobson, and the fourth class will be held at The Carlos Surratt Genealogy Room at Surry Community College in Dobson. The final class will be back at the museum. Museum members can attend for free, and for nonmembers, there is a $5 fee per class. Annual memberships to the museum can be purchased for $25 for seniors and students or $35 for individuals. There is a 25 student limit for the series. • The Surry County Beekeepers Association will hold a beginning beekeepers school beginning Feb. 25 at the North Carolina Farm Bureau building in Dobson in the downstairs meeting room. The other classes will be March 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost for registration is $35, which includes a study book and classroom instruction. The cost of an additional family member without the book is $25. Children 16 years and younger may attend free with a registered adult. Additional books are $10 each if available. • A spring Master Gardener class will begin March 5 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Surry office in Dobson. Classes will be held each Tuesday for 13 weeks. • The Surry Arts Council presents clogging workshops and classes taught by Samantha Wilhelmi. These clogging lessons are perfect for all ages and dance abilities, from beginner to advanced. Workshops will be held before the monthly Old-Time Dances in the Old-Time Music Hall, below the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, 218 Rockford St., from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The workshop is free with the purchase of a dance ticket. The dance starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $5. Popular old-time dance band The Slate Mountain Ramblers will provide the music for the dance. The Old-Time Dance and Clogging Workshop are held on the first Saturday of every month. Also, Wilhelmi is teaching clogging classes every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Surry Arts Council dance room. • The Dobson Community Library, 113 S. Crutchfield St., has storytime each Wednesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. They read a book, do a craft, color, sing and dance and have fun while learning. Those attending should feel free to stay longer and play with the toys and children’s computer.

• Join the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History at 10 a.m. for the first Friday of every month in fun and fantasy. Explore history and nature through books, activities and more. This program is free and is intended for preschool-age children.

Support Groups

• The 2012 Twelve Oaks Alzheimer’s Support Group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 4 to 5 p.m. for the public.

• GriefShare is a bi-weekly support group for people grieving the death of someone. Learn valuable information that will help. The program is held at Calvary Baptist Church, 416 S. • Mother’s Community Connection is for parents with concerns in education, discipline and family fun. Learn about nutrition, healthy living, raising a family on a budget and more.
