HENDERSONVILLE — Mount Airy’s wrestling team has four athletes still in the hunt for a title at the 1A regional tournament here.

The Bears took 11 wrestlers down Friday. Five lost in the first round and will wrestle first thing this morning in the consolation bracket. They could reach as high as third place if they win their remaining matches.

Two wrestlers advanced through the first round, then lost in the second. They also will be in the consolation bracket, but will go after their five teammates have had their first matches.

The four getting two wins on Friday were Triston Mabry (145), Landon Mumford (170), Zaqwan Dobson (195) and Mason Timmerman (220).

Mabry earned a first-period pin, then a 4-2 overtime decision. He will face East Surry’s Jimmy Speer in the semifinal.

Mumford had a first-period pin and a 10-8 decision.

Dobson made two straight pins.

Timmerman received a forfeit when his first opponent came in too heavy. Then he pulled off a shocker, pinning returning champion Rhett Hoy in the first round. Hoy is the top-ranked wrestler in 1A, according to Retro Rankings. Next up is Brandon Stiles, the third-ranked wrestler in the state.

Two other Bears were set to compete, but suffered terrible injuries this week.

Alex Howard (106) tore the ACL in one of his knees. Jordan Atkins (182) broke one of his ankles.

The consolation matches are set to begin at 8:30 a.m. today.
