The North Surry varsity boys forced the tempo on Friday and beat the Bishop McGuinness Villains by a score of 49-44.

Austin Handy led the Greyhounds with 19 points.

Head Coach Travis Gammons said, “We were able to rally good at halfcourt on both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively and the bench came in and contributed big minutes at key times.”

Gammons credited Caleb Hobernicht and Nick Wilson as a large part of the Greyhound’s success in the win.

“They played huge minutes that were crucial to helping us win,” said Gammons.

The Greyhounds got off to a quick 9-0 lead against the Villains in the first quarter and held them scoreless until just 3:50 was left in the period.

“We are starting to play the best basketball that we have played all year round,” said Gammons.

The coach said a change in momentum came after “we learned to value our possessions.”

In order to win where the margin for error is slim, it is necessary to get in a winning position, said Gammons.

“Valuing what we do puts ourselves in a position to win,” he said.

Handy’s 19 was especially big as forward Grayson Vernon has been in a walking boot with a foot injury.

Point guard Klay Newsome was the second-highest Hound with 13 points. Nathan Fletcher scored five. Jacob Snow and Marcus Sawyers each scored four points. Ryan March and Nick Wilson scored two each.

The Greyhounds move to 8-16 overall and 4-11 in the conference.

They will play the East Surry Cardinals on Friday and honor Greyhounds on Senior Night.
