HIGH POINT — The Surry Runnin’ Patriots girls’ basketball team won their final conference basketball game of the season on the road against High Point on Thursday by a score of 49-35.

The Patriots will advance to the West Regional Tournament next Friday in Winston-Salem, said Surry Runnin’ Patriots Head Coach Todd Hill. They finished the conference season with a 4-0 record. The team has a 22-6 overall record.

In the last meeting against the High Point Eagles, the Surry Runnin’ Patriots won 54-41, said Hill.

Hill said they have a first-round bye in the play-offs and will play the winner of the game between the Western Carolina Home Educators and Hickory Home Educators.

Hill said the Patriots will be ready to meet the winner in Winston-Salem and will be focusing on sound fundamentals as part of the game-plan.

“In order to win, we have to take care of the ball, control the glass, and stay out of foul trouble,” Hill said.

Though the Patriots eventually won Thursday night, Hill said during the first three quarters of the High Point game, “We could not throw the ball in the ocean sitting in a row boat.”

Overall, Hill said the Patriots played good defense that kept them in the game until the fourth quarter when they started knocking down the shots, he said.

The Patriots scored 27 points in the fourth quarter and staged a come-back after being down 17-14 at the half. The third quarter ended with the Eagles still on top by one point at 23-22.

Hill said Jessica Boyd scored 14 points and Joye Harrison was 7-8 at the foul line in the final quarter.

“We spread our offense out and got to the rim. When we got fouled we knocked down the shots,” said Hill. The Patriots shot 15 for 18 in the fourth quarter from the foul line, Hill said.

“We stayed calm and just kept playing. By making plays, we finished it,” Hill said.

The Surry Runnin’ Patriots are scheduled to play Carlisle at the Armfield Civic Center Friday.

Boyd led with 23 points and five steals. Harrison had nine points, six rebounds, seven assists and seven steals. Sydney Bedsaul scored six points and Camille Fishel had three and six rebounds. Kaylee Paris scored three points and had six rebounds. Emily Marshall scored four and Kelsey Cave had one.

Ashley Marshall had six rebounds and Paris had six rebounds.

The Eagles high scorer was Madison Whitt with 15.
