WINSTON-SALEM — A strong third quarter lifted Winston-Salem Prep over the Lady Bears 60-48 Tuesday.

“We had some turnovers, then we had some shots that we just didn’t make,” said Mount Airy Coach Howard Mayo.

The Lady Phoenix held a 24-17 halftime lead on Mount Airy, then erupted for 24 points in the third to build a 15-point edge.

“That’s when we hit a stretch where we turned the ball over,” said Mayo. Prep converted in transition, and when they missed, the players hit the offensive boards and got putbacks.

Center Celia Tibbs, at 6-foot-1, and backup Kristian Saunders, 6-foot-2, each scored 16 points inside.

Alex Atkins led the Bears with 14 points, but no teammate had more than four.

Kathryn Beasley and Jasmine Varney scored four each, Davi Barbour three, and two points each came from Mikayla Seivers, Andi Moore, Skylar Flippen, Ayano Shelton, Jordan Jackson and Halee Ratcliff.

Boys Game

The Granite Bears lost to the Phoenix 83-50 in the nightcap.

Prep improved to 6-0, tied with West Stokes atop the Northwest Conference standings.

The Bears slipped to 7-5, 2-4 in the conference.

The Phoenix scored 22 or more points in each of the first three quarters. They led 22-13 after one, 45-27 at the break and 69-38 after three quarters.

Austin Taylor led the Bears with a game-high 17 points, and Caleb Horton scored 14. Dylan Gallimore added six, Darius Gwyn six, Benji Hicks four, Khaleel Dailey three and Carson Mounce one.

Prep was led by Mike Hughes 16, Raekwon Harney 15 and Coye Simmons 14.

Mount Airy hosts Bishop on Friday.
