SPARTA — North Surry won both its basketball games Friday at the Alleghany Christmas tournament here.

The Lady Greyhounds blitzed Patrick County 60-23, and the Greyhounds beat Alleghany 58-49.

The boys (5-7) bounced back from a loss to Watauga Thursday to split their two games.

Alleghany has three guards that aren’t that tall, but are very quick, noted Coach Travis Gammons. Then the Trojans have two big, strong guys on the inside. And, he added, they all play hard.

The Hounds inched ahead 17-15 after the first quarter, but then created some breathing room in the second to lead 36-27.

“We defended a lot better as a team,” he said of the second period. The defenders worked hard to make every shot difficult, then the rebounding was better to limit the Trojans to one shot.

The improved defense also got the offense rolling with a couple of easy buckets and better looks.

The Hounds outscored the Trojans 13-10 in the third to build the lead to 12 and won by nine.

Point guard Klay Newsome had a good game against Watauga and followed it up with another good performance Friday.

“Klay shot the ball really well both days,” said Gammons. Klay did a good job handling the ball and played tight defense, too. He probably had the best performance over both days, Gammons said.

Newsome scored 12 points. Grayson Vernon led the Hounds with 27.

Grayson got to the line more in this game and managed to get a few more shots to fall, the coach said.

Jacob Snow also had a good game, scoring 13 to give North three players in double figures.

Austin France added six, Austin Handy and Marcus Sawyers four each and Nathan Fletcher two.

While Gammons would have liked a sweep of both games, the coach said it feels good to return home with at least a split.

Lady Hounds

In the girls game, North Surry jumped all over Patrick County at the start and never let off the gas pedal.

The Lady Hounds (10-1) went up 20-4 after the first quarter and led 33-10 at the break.

Remarking on the fast start, Coach Shane Slate said, “We just did a really great job of finding each other for layups.”

Five different girls scored in the first quarter, and the team shared 19 assists for the game.

Forward Kristina Rumplasch led the way with 10 assists. She also scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

The Hounds had 17 steals, but they were spread out over the course of the game, the coach said. The difference in building the first-half lead was contesting every attempt and rebounding well so the Lady Cougars didn’t get second shots.

North Surry had four players in double figures. Erin March tied Rumplasch for the game high of 13 points. Jordan Badgett added 11, and Malaya Johnson had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds to go with three blocks. Badgett had four steals to tie Rumplasch for the game high.

Mary Grace Hunter scored five points, Maddison Hawks four, and Morgan Hawks and Abby Andrews two each.

As a team, the Hounds were 10-14 from the foul line (71 percent).

Ebony Reynolds led Patrick County with six points.

The Greyhounds next play at home Friday against Winston-Salem Prep.
