GREENSBORO — The Surry Runnin’ Patriot girls lost to the New Garden Friends by a score of 61-41 on Thursday but still remained under 10 turnovers and met the team’s goal in that category on Thursday, said Head Coach Todd Hill.

Hill said the Runnin’ Patriots played well in the first quarter but the New Garden Friends team got several six point runs on his team in the second and third quarter.

The score was even at the end of the first quarter with both teams tied 11-11 and at half, the New Garden Friends led by five points with a score of 24-19.

The Pats did not re-adjust well but came out flat in the third quarter, Hill said.

He said the New Garden Friends had extended their lead at one period in the quarter by 17 points. He said his team brought that difference back to only being down by nine points by the quarter’s end. The Patriots closed the gap only after getting more aggressive, Hill said.

Hill said he told the team to keep shooting the ball even when they are flat. Hill said they did and then tightened the gap getting more points on the boards for the Surry Runnin’ Patriots but in the end it wasn’t enough.

The New Garden Friends led 40-31 going into the fourth quarter, but overall, the Pats could not beat the team on the board in rebounds. That became another important category that affected the team’s outcome on Thursday, he said.

Hill said in the two teams’ last meeting against one another, the Surry Runnin’ Patriots controlled the boards though they lost the game.

About Thursday’s game overall, Hill said, “They just got away from us, we probably played well 28 minutes throughout the whole game.”

The game’s leading scorers were: Kaylee Paris 17; Sydney Bedsaul 10; Joye Harrison 6; Jessica Boyd 4; and Ashley Marshall 4.

Bedsaul had eight rebounds and Camille Fishel had seven. Joye Harrison recorded six assists.
