Geneva Armstrong Key, 98, of Pilot Mountain died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at her home. Born in Surry County, Mrs. Key worked as a teacher at Pilot Mountain Elementary School after beginning her career in Bladen County. She was a member of Simmons Grove Baptist Church. She was educated in Pilot Mountain public schools and was a graduate of Campbell College and Appalachian State Teachers College. The widow of James Samuel Key, her survivors include her two sons, Donn Key of Pilot Mountain and Sam Key and his wife Cynthia of Roanoke, Virginia; a sister, Goldie Simmons of Pilot Mountain; and her three grandchildren, Lori Key of Charlotte, Hollie Nelson and her husband Garrett of Charlotte, and Ryan Key of Roanoke, Virginia. Mrs. Key was preceded in death by her sister, Ophelia Simmons and her brothers Lendo Armstrong, Laymon Armstrong, Ray Armstrong, and Harding Armstrong, who was killed serving in World War II in Italy. A funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Cox-Needham Chapel, Pilot Mountain, with Rev. Richard Durham officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the chapel and requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Simmons Grove Cemetery Fund, 443 Simmons Grove Church Rd, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041; the Salvation Army, 651 S. South St., Mount Airy, NC 27030; or the Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Ste. 420, Rockville, MD 20850.
