Point guard Klay Newsome returned from a sprained ankle to give North Surry a spark against Carver in a narrow victory.

WINSTON-SALEM — North Surry jumped out to an early lead on Carver, then held on for its first win of the basketball season 69-65.

The Greyhounds pulled ahead 15-5 in the first quarter and held a 12-point margin at halftime, 35-23.

“We were able to knock down some easy shots early,” said Coach Travis Gammons. “We got into a really good rhythm with our offense in the first quarter and scored on some easy baskets.”

Carver lost a close game to Surry Central in the 2A playoffs last February and returned several players.

“They are very athletic, and their guards are very quick,” said Gammons. “Quick on defense and with the ball, too.”

In the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets cut the difference to three at 62-59, but the Hounds added seven points in the closing minutes to protect the lead.

“I thought we showed a lot of poise and competed very well tonight,” said Gammons.

“Our defense played well, which led to some easy baskets,” he said. “We fed off our defense … especially in rebounding. We limited them to one shot attempt much of the night.”

Senior point guard Klay Newsome made his return after missing two games with a sprained ankle suffered last week.

After dropping a narrow 50-48 game to Elkin, the Hounds (1-3) were without Newsome in one-sided losses to 3A Hickory and 4A East Forsyth.

Gammons said Newsome played well as did Marcus Sawyers.

“Jacob Snow had a sound game all around,” he said.

North Surry opens conference play Tuesday by hosting Mount Airy.
