Northern welcomes 8 hospitalist to staff

Northern Hospital of Surry County will greet eight new full-time physicians who will be joining its medical staff as its new hospitalist group to provide inpatient care beginning Monday.

“This transition of the hospitalist program is reflective of the hospital’s commitment to serve its patients in a manner that truly puts the patients first as it works to improve all aspects of the patient experience,” the hospital said in a written statement.

The physicians, all of whom are Board Certified in internal medicine, are Dr. Tamas Bathory, Dr. Whitney French, Dr. Allen Jones, Dr. Angelce Kikerkov, Dr. Penny McDonald, Dr. Eric Melvin, Dr. Aniko Toth-Bagi, and Dr. William Lawing.

Each of the physicians have at least eight years of continuous hospitalist experience and all previously worked together at a tertiary care medical center in the Piedmont Triad. They also often worked with Northern Hospital’s emergency department and referring physicians, frequently partnering with them in the care of their acute patients who needed to be transferred. As a result, they became familiar with Northern Hospital’s staff and procedures and found it offered what they were looking for.

Toth-Bagi received her medical degree from Semmelweis University School of Medicine in Budapest, Hungary and completed her residency at Meridia Huron Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio.

Bathory attended medical school at Semmelweis University School of Medicine in Budapest and completed h is residency at Meridia Huron Hospital in Cleveland.

French completed his medical school at Duke University Medical School in Durham and his residency at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, Ala.

Allen Jones attended medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, Jackson, Miss., and his residency at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.

Kikerkov attended medical school at the Faculty of Medicine Sts Kiril & Metodij University, Skopje Macedonia, and completed his residency at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland.

Lawing attended medical school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill and his residency at the University of Virginia Hospitals in Charlottesville, Va.

Penny McDonald attended medical school at East Carolina University School of Medicine in Greenville at residency at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Melvin attended medical school at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, where he also completed his residency.
