The Surry Arts Council presents its annual production of “The Nutcracker” performed by the New York Ballet for Young Audiences, along with a few local students from the council’s dance program. These local dancers will get opportunity to perform on stage with professional dancers.

The Nutcracker ballet is a traditional story for the holidays. It tells the story of Clara, a young girl on the brink of womanhood, whose dreams are both childlike and tinged with romance. She is the favorite godchild of Herr Drosselmeyer, a mysterious clockmaker, who helps transport Clara and her Nutcracker Prince to a special realm. It is approximately one hour long, fully narrated, and uses the traditional musical score written by Tchaikovsky.

This production is intended for both lifetime lovers of dance and to those new to ballet as The Nutcracker is brought to life on stage through music, dance, costumes and light. The Surry Arts Council presents The Nutcracker ballet on Sunday 4 p.m. at the Andy Griffith Playhouse.

Tickets are $10. Contact the Surry Arts Council at 786-7998 for more information or to purchase advance tickets.
