JONESVILLE — The Lady Eagles scored early and often on a young Starmount team in an 83-49 blowout.

Aside from a close loss to 4A Reagan, Surry Central has run away from its three similarly sized opponents. In its three wins, the Eagles had an average margin of victory of 25.3 points.

Against Reagan, Cassidy Joyner and Courtney Hegler were the only players with more than two points.

Before this game, Coach Mandy Holt emphasized ball movement and scoring balance.

Other scorers had to step up, and it didn’t matter who those people were, she explained.

Joyner and Hegler scored well again, getting 20 and 15 points respectively. However, three teammates also tallied 12 or more points, giving the Eagles five players in double figures.

“I felt like we had a lot of good ball movement,” said Holt. The girls moved quickly up the floor on offense and played unselfishly.

Sarah Bruce scored 20, Kristin Key 14, Brittany Lewis 12 and Mikayla Cox two.

The Eagles led 21-8 after one and 45-18 at halftime.

The Lady Rams actually outscored in the Eagles in the third quarter 19-18, but the lead was still 26 points.

Holt said she was trying to coach the team as if it were a five-point game because games are so tight during Northwest Conference play.

“We didn’t want to be on cruise control,” she said. “We still have to work on transition defense, that’s where they made a little run in the third quarter.”

She coached the team on maintaining proper fundamentals like boxing out and playing pressure defense.

She was concerned about the foul discrepancy. The Eagles were whistled for 22 fouls and the Rams just four.

Central did hit the boards hard as several players netted four or more rebounds.

Joyner, Bruce and Lewis each had seven rebounds. Hegler and Key added five and Marlee Wilmoth four.

Joyner also gave the Eagles five assists and three steals. Hegler had two assists, one steal and three deflections.

Wilmoth added two assists, two steals and three deflections. Lewis notched a block, an assist and a steal.

Holt was proud of the freshman Key for stepping in to take a charge.

This was a very young Starmount team, Holt said, with a lot of freshmen and not many upperclassmen.

Still, she is excited about the way her team played coming off a loss.

On Friday, the Eagles (3-1) will host East Wilkes, which lost to East Surry 62-31 Monday.
