North Surry and Surry Central swept two Davidson County teams to open the wrestling season.
The Greyhounds beat North Davidson 54-26, then took care of West Davidson 72-11.
At the same time on the other end of the gym, the Golden Eagles first beat West Davidson 52-28 and then North Davidson 48-21.
North Coach Eric Jessup began the evening by recognizing past Greyhound wrestlers in attendance. He drew the crowd’s attention to the three banners that will go in the fieldhouse honoring the best wrestlers for their accomplishments over the past 35 years like winning a conference title, winning a regional title and placing at the state tournament.
“The whole North Surry wrestling family would like to thank Interstate Sign Co., who donated those banners free of charge,” said Jessup.
“This was a great way to start the season,” said Central Coach Stephen Priddy. Having the alumni there created an awesome atmosphere in the gym, he said.
North Surry went 2-0 at seven of the 14 weight classes, while Central had five wrestlers go 2-0, including returning 220-pound champion Wes Brown.
Brown broke his leg in the first football game of the season in August, but looked good at heavyweight on Tuesday. He tackled his first opponent in about three seconds and had a pin in less than 20 seconds.
Also winning both matches were Nathon Bautista, Uriel Secundino, Bryant White and Humberto Moreira.
Going 1-1 were Kevin Pack, Mason Snow, Raymond Dance, Hunter White, Jared Dimmette and Zack Martin. Nick Coe was 1-0 in his only match of the night.
The Hounds’ four all-conference seniors won both their matches: Austin McMillian (120), Tristen Brannock (126), Austin Collins (152) and Levi Slate (195).
Like Brown, Slate made short work of his first opponent, picking him off the ground and dropping him down before getting a pin.
Also getting two wins were Devyn Green (145), Corbin Bullins (170) and Dakota Goss (182).
Jessup said he was proud of three of his sophomores. Saige Wolfe, Austin Rozier and Caleb Lowe all were pinned in the first match. The coach told them to forget about those losses and focus on West Davidson.
They didn’t wallow, he said. The three picked themselves up and came back to earn a fall themselves.
Because of those sophomore pins, the Hounds found themselves in a close match against North Davidson.
“I know we won big in the first match (24 points), but after the first six matches it was 18-all,” he said. “Our guys had some first-match jitters maybe.”
Surry Central is hosting the Jimmy Martin Duals this Saturday. Mount Airy and North Surry will participate. East Surry won’t have it first match until December.
