Mount Airy’s Jordan Jackson nabbed tennis player of the year, while local schools made up 10 of the 15 spots on the Northwest All-Conference Team announced Monday.

Jackson was an easy choice for her third player of the year plaque as she was undefeated in conference play and went to her third-straight 1A state championship match.

As the top seed, she also led the Lady Bears to back-to-back state dual-team titles.

She is joined on the first team by four teammates, while two others were honorable mentions.

Davi Barbour, Jade Hughes, Haley Thomas and Bree Hughes were the second through fifth seeds on the Mount Airy team that finished 14-0 in the Northwest and 22-2 on the season. The Bears finished the season on a 20-match winning streak.

Elizabeth Dinkins was penciled in as the Bears’ third seed, but was ill and didn’t play singles this season. Still, she made honorable mention for her doubles work with Jade Hughes. Carley VanHoy started the season as a reserve, but earned her way into the starting six and took the other honorable mention.

Four other schools had two players on the first team.

East Surry’s Lauren Thompson and Haley Manuel were on the first team, as were North Surry’s Sarah Glasco and Harriette Blackburn. Savannah Wilson was Surry Central’s lone member of the first team.

For the honorable mentions, East’s Brooke Tickle and Tiffany King were featured as well as North’s Chainey Kuykendall and Chantel Davis and Central’s Megan Gillespie and Abby Samuels.

The Lady Bears’ success yet again this year meant another coach of the year for Scott Kniskern. He has won the award the past four seasons. He recently won his 100th career match as head coach in just five seasons with a record of 103-13.
