DOBSON — A public hearing on a proposal to locate a Dollar General store across the road from Flat Rock Elementary School highlights what promises to be a marathon meeting of the Surry County Board of Commissioners Monday night.

The meeting is set to get under way at 6 p.m. in the Commissioner’s Meeting Room of the Surry County Government Center in Dobson.

The public hearing is on a proposal by Dollar General to reclassify a 1.35 acre parcel located at 1650 E. Pine Street for a community business use. The property is zoned for general residential use, and has a dwelling and a garage on the property.

Under the proposal the dwelling and garage would be torn down.

In addition to the public hearing, County Manager Chris Knopf is set to update the board on the ongoing efforts of the Interstates Sewer Project, which would extend sewer service to outlying areas of the county off N.C. 89 near the intersection of Interstates 77 and 74.

The county recently severed ties with its former engineering firm, Hobbs Upchurch & Associates, following a break-up at the firm, and has begun working with Adams Heath, LLC.

In other business, representatives from county auditor Martin Starnes and Associates will update the board on the county’s audit and Martha Brintle of the county’s IT department will request an update to the county’s electronic storage system.

Parks and Recreation Director Daniel White will request the county update its agreement with the Northern Triad Soccer Club.
