Runnin’ Patriots Sawyers takes fourth in state

PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Surry County Home Educators Running’ Patriots boys’ varsity team took third place in the cross country state track meet last week against Asheville, Forsyth, and High Point.

They Patriots had a score of 76 points while Asheville scored 24 points and Forysth tallied 41. High Point finished last with a score of 100. The girls finished second behind the Forsyth team with a score of 50 points.

Hunter Sawyers finished fourth in the state for the boy’s Runnin’ Patriots. He ran the 3.1-mile run with a time of 19:06. The other top three finishes went to Asheville. The top scorers were Andrew Robinson, who took first place with a time of 17:46; Philip Gibson came in second with a time of 18:52, and Lance Morsell recorded a time of 18:54.

The highest finish for the Runnin’ Patriot girls went to Kenzie Collins who recorded a time of 23:47. Leslie Woodley of Forsyth home educators team finished first with a time of 20:37.

Th Runnin’ Patriot cross country program is a young one, according to Coach Todd Hill, who is looking forward to its growth in the coming seasons, he said.

During the state finals, “over 70 percent of the runners ran a personal best, and that is a good goal to reach,” added Hill.

About this season’s finish, he stated, “Overall, I am really pleased with the results. I think we can be really competitive statewide if they continue to run.”
