This is a busy week for local schools as state playoffs affect all six fall sports.

Cross country, golf, tennis and volleyball are in their final week, while football and soccer are just getting started.

The state 1A/2A girls golf championship began Monday and concludes today at Foxfire Golf and Country Club near Pinehurst.

The tennis quarterfinals of the 1A dual-team playoffs was scheduled for Monday, but the weather postponed that. The Mount Airy Lady Bears will be in action at 3 p.m. today on the indoor courts at the Piedmont Tennis Center in Greensboro, according to Coach Scott Kniskern.

If the Bears win today, Mount Airy advances to the West regional final that was originally scheduled for Wednesday. The match could be Wednesday, or it could be moved to Thursday to give a day of rest to the players.

The state 1A final is set for Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center, where the Bears took the trophy last year.

Also today, the Lady Greyhounds of North Surry host Polk County at 6 p.m. for the West regional final for volleyball. The winner advances to the state 2A final Saturday in Reynolds Coliseum at N.C. State University in Raleigh.

On Wednesday, 11 area teams will open the state 1A and 2A soccer playoffs. Mount Airy and Surry Central are at home. East Surry is on the road.

On Friday, three local football teams will begin the playoffs. Mount Airy is at home, while North Surry travels to West Stokes and East Surry goes to South Stokes.

Saturday is a busy day. Along with the tennis and volleyball finals, soccer will hold its second round.

The state cross country finals are Saturday in Kernersville.

At Beeson Park, the 2A boys will run at 10 a.m. and the 2A girls at 11 a.m.

The 1A boys run at 3 p.m., then state champion Kirsten Parries will defend her 1A state title at 4 p.m.

In Dobson Saturday, the Surry County Sports Hall of Fame will unveil the new names on the monument at Fisher River Park at 3 p.m. Then in the gym at Surry Community College, the induction ceremony commences at 4 p.m.
