Lady Cardinals advance in state playoffs with win over North Wilkes

PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry steamed to a victory over North Wilkes Saturday in three sets in its first round of state playoff volleyball action.

The Lady Cardinals won the opening set of the match, 25-18 and followed that with a 25-17 win in the second set and clawed past for the win, 25-23 in the final stanza.

“In sets one and two we came out strong and our defensive play was really good,” commented Cardinal Coach Caleb Gilley. “In set three, it seemed like we lost our intensity but we recovered for the win. I was really pleased with our overall effort.”

Keri Fulp had a good evening with 14 kills, two aces and six blocks. Jesse Barr had eight digs for the Cards. Sydney Mosley had 10 and Gabi Jessup had three kills and six blocks. Ashley Smith had two kills and four assists, Olivia Sheets had 18 assists, Kacie Markle had four kills and Destiny Edmonds had two kills and seven assists.

The win lifts East’s record overall to 18-7 with a 12-4 record in Northwest Conference play. The Cards are slated to host the next round of the playoffs on Tuesday against Albemarle. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
