Mount Airy continued it’s solid play Thursday against conference rival Surry Central, defeating the Golden Eagles in four games.

The Granite Bears took their fourth win of the season with set scores of 25-12, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-17.

Central looked sluggish early and had trouble with Mount Airy’s improving service game.

A big block by the Bear’s Lindsey Payne on Central’s top scorer senior Michaela Wall set the tone of the match and gave Mount Airy the mental edge.

“We played as a team,” Bear coach Kim Lyons said. “We played at a level thats higher than what we have been playing at. We had several kills which of course pumps them up a little bit.”

Payne had a monster night, finishing with 13 kills, two blocks and a 17-of-18 performance in service.

Jenna Clement added 10 kills of her own to along with nine from Alexis Allen.

“We didn’t show up ready to play,” Central coach Leah McKinney said. “We weren’t as agressive as Mount Airy. They out hustled us.”

Samantha Mosely and Jennifer Coe each had seven kills for Central, while setter Erin Howlett had 25 assists.

East Surry beats East Wilkes 3-1

PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry shook off a sluggish first half to score three unanswered goals and take a big non-conference win over East Wilkes 3-1 Thursday.

East Wilkes scored in the 36th minute of the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

East Surry coach Bill Hart said he was not at all pleased with his team’s play in the opening period but that senior leaders stepped up and lit a fire in the Cardinals during the break.

“We were not playing well,” he said. “We were playing selfish ball to be honest. But I saw a lot of leadership at halftime coming from Dallas Hartley and Damion Padron. They brought the team together and two minutes into the second half Carson Mellow scored the game-tying goal.”

Fifteen minutes after Mellow’s goal, an East Wilkes handball in the box set up a penalty kick from Padron to give East Surry the lead for good.

Padron added another goal later, when he danced down the baseline and slipped the ball past the East Wilkes keeper.

Hart said he was proud of his team’s dominating second-half performance.

“It was a gut check,” Hart said. “I say this to my team, ‘You might be a better team than us, you might be more talented than us but you won’t outwork or out-grit us. We will have more heart than you. And East Wilkes had more grit in the first half. Those boys at halftime really stepped up.”

East Surry improves to 4-0-1 overall.

Bears win shortened game

Mount Airy soccer has had more bad luck with weather than it has with its opponents this season as the Bears took a 1-0 win over Elkin Thursday in a game shortened due to lightening.

Mount Airy’s Wes Hurley found Chase Pilcher for the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute to set up the win. A thunderstorm which caused a delay during the half hung around and forced the two sides to call the game off after just one half of play.

“We keep getting rained out so we really wanted to play on our end and I felt like Elkin wanted to play but we had to call it off. Elkin is a well-coached and disciplined team, so I am proud of my guys for playing as well as they did.”

The Bears improve to 2-0 overall and are looking for opponents. Mount Airy doesn’t have another game scheduled until Sept. 7 at Bishop McGuinness.
