The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Jack Gardin, water and sewer projects manager, is scheduled to go before the board at 7:45 p.m. to deliver updates on current water and sewer projects. He also will present lists of remaining tasks to be completed for the Forrest Oaks / Surry Acres / Snowberry Lane project and the Interstates Water and Sewer District project.
Part of the Interstates Water and Sewer District project has involved building a water tower on Pine Ridge Road. Jimmy and Glenda Nixon, who live next to the water tower, claim the construction of the tower caused damage to their property. At the last county board meeting, Commissioner Craig Hunter told Gardin that the engineering and construction companies working on the water tower aspect of the project needed to hurry up and create a list of what needs to be done and complete the project.
Near the beginning of the meeting, an open forum will be held. Around 6:15 p.m. Todd Tucker, president of the Surry County Economic Development Partnership, will give an economic development update.
Tax Administrator Michael Hartgrove will submit his annual tax settlement for approval around 6:30 p.m. The settlement will include information about the total amount of taxes collected in the county last year and the taxes that remain unpaid.
At 6:45 p.m., Kim Bates, county planning director, is scheduled to present a zoning request to the board. The request to reclassify a portion of land on Belgium Lane near U.S. 601 from Rural Agricultural to Rural Business was brought before the board last month as well. At the planning board’s recommendation, the commissioners agreed to table the petition so it could be revised. A new survey has separated the 2-acre tract into residential and commercial sections as suggested by the planning board. The planning board recommends approval of the proposal, which was submitted by John D. Williams.
Bates also will present a proposed resolution endorsing the extension of the portion of N.C. Highway 268 that is designated as a Scenic Byway by the N.C. Department of Transportation. The Yadkin Valley Heritage Corridor Partnership — a regional planning initiative for Caldwell, Wilkes, Yadkin and Surry counties — is applying for the extension. If approved, the Scenic Byway designation would extend from the current end point in Goshen to continue through Pilot Mountain. The designation’s purpose is to highlight unusual, exceptional or unique scenic routes in the state.
The commissioners will recognize Boy Scouts, some Surry Community College athletes, and retiree Brenda Davis after the zoning discussions.
At 7:30 p.m., Fire Marshal Doug Jones is scheduled to present an updated permits and fees schedule for the Surry County Fire Prevention Inspections program for approval from the board. According to a memo sent to the board, Jones said the only changes are the permits that have been added to the latest version of the state fire code.
“There are no changes in any fees,” Jones said in the memo.
Gardin’s updates will follow, then County Manager Dennis Thompson will present general county business. After the commissioners bring up any remaining general county business, they will retreat into closed session to discuss personnel and legal matters. The commissioners may discuss the Nixon couple’s requests for compensation during closed session. The meeting will adjourn after the board comes out of closed session.
The meetings of the Surry County Board of Commissioners regularly take place on the first and third Mondays of each month at 6 p.m. These meetings are open to the public. The meetings are held in suite 329 at the Surry County Government Center on Hamby Road in Dobson.
Any person with a disability needing an accommodation at the meeting should contact the county manager’s office at 401-8201. Elkin residents should call 366-8201.
