Kyla Sue Barnes and Kenan Beau Johnson were married July 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Highland Park Baptist Church, Mount Airy. The Rev. J.D. Harmon of Martinsville, Va., officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Richard W. and Donna B. Puckett of Mount Airy and Rusty and Wanda Barnes of Collinsville, Va. Her maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Prillaman of Collinsville, and her paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Cornell Barnes of Ridgeway, Va.

The bride graduated from Mount Airy High School in 2005. She graduated from Surry Community College in 2007 with an associate’s degree in the arts. She will graduate in December 2010 from Fayetteville Technical Community College with a degree in funeral service, and she is enrolled in the nursing program at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem. She is employed by the law firm of Faw, Folger & Johnson in Mount Airy.

The groom is the son of Sandy and Dan Palfreeman of Mount Airy and Edwin Johnson and Sarah Stevens, also of Mount Airy. His maternal grandmother is Ethel Cox of Claudville, Va., and the late Acie Cox. His paternal grandparents are Bo and Wanda Johnson of Mount Airy.

The groom graduated from Mount Airy High School in 2005. He attended Surry Community College and is employed by R.J. Reynolds in Tobaccoville.

A program of wedding music was performed by Corda Entertainment, a string quintet featuring two violins, viola, cello and a trumpet. Musical selections included “O Perfect Love” by Barnby; “New York, New York” by Kander; “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Bach; “Canon in D” by Pachelbel; and “Trumpet Tune” by Purcell. The bride was presented to the awaiting guests in the church sanctuary to Hector Berlioz’s “Te Deum,” featuring the trumpet.

The bride was given in marriage by her parents and escorted by her father. She wore an elegant sheath ivory gown made of shimmer satin. The bodice featured a strapless sweetheart neckline with ruching which extended down to the waist. There were delicate hand-beaded appliqués of pearls and crystals on the gown which mirrored around to the back that extended to the waist. The hem was scalloped and also had the hand-beaded appliqués which extended to a lovely chapel train. She carried a bouquet of long-stemmed calla lilies wrapped with pearls and designed by Steve Scott of Airmont Florist.

Julie Ann Barnes of Mount Airy, sister of bride, was maid of honor. She wore a short black silk dress with a rounded neckline with pleating at the bust and ruching at the waist. Bridesmaids were Allison Foster and Ashley Foster Bradburn, both of Collinsville and twin stepsisters of the bride; Katie Puckett of Mount Airy, stepsister of the bride; Audra Hodges Puckett of Mount Airy, stepsister-in-law of the bride; Kaitlin Johnson of Mount Airy, sister of the groom; and Sarah Stephens, Amber Hiatt, Haley Hooker and Lauren Schwartz, all of Mount Airy. They each wore dresses identical to the maid of honor’s dress. The maid of honor and the bridesmaids each carried a bouquet of hand-tied yellow gerbera daisies. Hair and make-up for the ladies in the wedding party was provided by Neil Combs of Mount Airy.

The flower girl was Kailee Overby, cousin of the groom, and the daughter of Scott Overby of Claudville. She wore a tea-length white satin dress with a black satin sash tied into a bow in the back.

The groom wore a black tuxedo with a white vest and a white bowtie. A miniature white calla lily decorated the lapel. Steven Fowler of Mount Airy was the groom’s best man. He wore a black tuxedo with a yellow vest and a yellow bowtie. Miniature yellow daisies decorated the lapel. The groomsmen were Adam Barnes of Mount Airy, brother of the bride; Ronnie Hayes of Sunset Beach; Adam Richardson, Blake Haynes, E.J. Spencer, Ben Schwartz and Payden Mason, all of Mount Airy; and Scott Overby of Claudville, cousin of the groom. The groomsmen wore tuxedos identical to the best man. The tuxedos were provided by F. Rees and Co. of Mount Airy.

The ring bearer was Gavin Puckett of Black Mountain, stepnephew of the bride, and the son of Tyler and Amber Puckett. He wore a black tuxedo identical to the groom’s attire and a miniature calla lily on the lapel.

Guest register attendant was Chelsea Palfreeman of Mount Airy, stepsister of the groom. She wore a short black silk dress with ruching at the waist.

Wedding program attendants were Callie Lovell and Fallon Lovell of Stoneville. They are the twin daughters of Angela Osborne. They wore black silk tea-length dresses with ruching at the waist.

Wedding readers were Amber Harwood Puckett of Black Mountain, stepsister-in-law of the bride; and Ashley Joyce of Mount Airy.

Linda H. Harris of Martinsville, Va., was the wedding director.

Following the wedding, a dinner and dance was held at Cross Creek Country Club in Mount Airy, hosted by the bride’s mother and stepfather, Donna B. Puckett and Richard W. Puckett.

Steve Scott of Airmont Florist decorated the club’s tables with tall, clear glass vases of long-stemmed, white calla lilies and long-stemmed, yellow gerbera daisies, votive candles, mirrors and rock crystals. Firefly, of Greensboro, provided up lighting throughout the club and monogramming on the dance floor. The wedding guests danced to music provided by John Haskins, master of ceremonies and a professional disc jockey with Friendly Neighborhood DJ of Greensboro. The evening included a photo presentation of the bride and groom; the Love Story of the Bride and Groom, presented by Mr. Haskins; a toast to the bridal couple, presented by Julie Barnes, sister of the bride and maid of honor; and a toast to the bridal couple, presented by Steven Fowler, the best man.

The seven-tiered fondant wedding cake was designed and made by Mandy Smithers of Mount Airy. The wedding cake featured four flavors and was decorated with handmade and fresh gerbera daisies and scroll designs. The four flavors of cake consisted of the traditional white wedding cake, red velvet cake, fresh strawberry cake and chocolate cake. The cake sat on top of a lighted base accented with yellow gerbera daisies.

The couple’s first dance was to the song, “God Must Have Spent A Little More Time on You” by N’Sync. The bride danced with her father to the song “Daddy’s Little Girl” by Michael Bolton. The groom danced with his mother to the song “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

David Rosen, of Photo Innovations of High Point, provided the wedding photography and video slide show. He designed an engagement photo book for guests to express their best wishes to the bridal couple. The bridal portrait also was taken by David Rosen on location at the Tanger Family Bicentennial Gardens in Greensboro. The bridal portrait was on display at Cross Creek Country Club during the evening celebration.

The couple took a honeymoon trip to California, where they boarded the cruise ship, Carnival’s Splendor, sailing to the Mexican Riviera. The trip included Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and Maztalan in Mexico, before returning to Long Beach, Calif.

The wedding rehearsal was held at Highland Park Baptist Church on July 16, followed by a rehearsal dinner hosted by the groom’s mother, Sandy Palfreeman, and stepfather, Dan Palfreeman. The dinner was catered by Little Richard’s Barbeque. The groom’s cake was designed and made by Stephanie Venable of Mount Airy. It was designed to resemble a corn hole table, a favorite game of the bridal couple. The cake featured two flavors, chocolate cake and white cake, and was decorated with the couple’s initials and wedding date.

The bridal couple was honored on the following occasions prior to the wedding: a bridal shower was given by the bride’s grandmother, Nadine G. Prillaman, and the bride’s great-aunt, Mary Jo Greenwood, both of Collinsville, on April 18 at The Scenic Room in Patrick Springs, Va.; a bridal shower with the theme of “They’re Hooked” was given on May 22 at Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy, hosted by the bridesmaids; a bridal shower was given by Sandy Palfreeman, the groom’s mother, Debbie Overby, the groom’s aunt, and Kaitlin Johnson, the groom’s sister, on May 29 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mount Airy. The groom and Steve Fowler, the best man, and Adam Barnes, brother of the bride, played golf on June 3 at Skyline Golf Club on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The bridal couple also was honored at a wedding shower on June 26 hosted by the groom’s father, Edwin Johnson, and stepmother, Sarah Stevens, the groom’s grandmother, Wanda Johnson, and the groom’s sister, Sharon Freeman, in the fellowship hall of Highland Park Baptist Church.

A Bridesmaids’ Spa and Lingerie Party was held on July 10 at Infinity Day Spa in Mount Airy, and included a bridesmaids’ brunch.

A Bachelorette Party was hosted by Julie Barnes, sister of the bride, and bridesmaids, Amber Hiatt and Sarah Stephens, on the evening of July 10, in Charlotte. The bachelor’s weekend was held June 10-13 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., hosted by the best man and the groomsmen.

In lieu of wedding favors at the wedding and at the reception, the bridal couple made a contribution to a food pantry in Mount Airy.

Out-of-town guests for the wedding weekend included family and friends from Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Missouri and Washington, D.C.

The couple resides at 325 W. Church St., Mount Airy.
