After the May figure of 11.2 was released, Bobbi Wessling, manager of the N.C. Employment Security Commission office in Mount Airy, said she expected the rate to stay stagnant for the next few months. This has held true from April to June, when percentages have remained slightly above 11 percent.
Statewide, the unemployment rate crept from 10 percent in May to 10.1 percent in June. The state unemployment rate has been below 11 percent since March, when the rate dropped to 10.9 percent from 11.8 in February.
Surry County was one of 45 counties in North Carolina to see an increase in its unemployment rate in June. Latest figures show the labor force in Surry County to be 33,590 people, with 29,809 employed.
