From playing in the pool to skating and watching movies, kids ages 5 to 12 are not only having fun this summer at the Reeves Community Center Day Camp programs, but they are getting exercise and making new friends in the process.
On Monday, kids in the Day Camp program played at Riverside Park in the morning then swam in the pool at RCC in the afternoon. Kids in the Park program went to the Mount Airy Public Library in the morning, then spent the afternoon roller skating at Starlite Skate Center.
Robin Semones, site coordinator with Mount Airy Parks and Recreation, said she really enjoys working with the kids in the summer camp program through Reeves Community Center.
Ian Robertson, 5, is enjoying camp with his older brother, Luke, 7. He said his favorite activities have been playing dodge ball, tubing, going skating and the movies.
Jo Snow, 9, said she has enjoyed tubing down the Ararat River the most out of all the activities she has been involved with in the camp this summer.
“It’s really cool,” said Snow.
Madison Ramey is spending her fourth summer in the program. She looks forward to attending camp every year.
Thomas Terry, 12, has been in the program for seven years. He likes swimming and playing with his friends. He also likes to go bowling and going skating during the program.
Austin Gwyn, 10, said he likes going on field trips and playing in the gym.
The camps are open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Fonda Mooney, family services director with Mount Airy Parks and Recreation Program, said the camp is a great value for parents. There are still some openings in the Two-Week camps that are held at RCC. There is no start or stop date on those camps, kids just come for a two-week period. Those two-week periods cost $70 a week for city residents and $88 for non-residents. There is a 20-percent discount with an RCC membership.
While both the Park and the Day Camp programs are already full for the summer, applications are being taken for the After-School program, which begins on Aug. 25. The program is from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Students with Mount Airy City Schools can be dropped by city school buses. Students from Millennium Charter Academy are picked up by the buses at RCC. That program is $35 for city residents and $43 for non-residents. There is a discount for those with youth memberships at RCC.
