Police announced Wednesday that charges had been filed in the case, which stems from an early morning incident last Thursday at Ayers Trading Post at 107 E. Pine St.
Witnesses alerted police at about 12:10 a.m. that a break-in was in progress at the site across the street from the Mount Airy Post Office.
Three individuals were observed leaving the trading post on foot, carrying numerous items allegedly taken from the business, and heading toward the center of downtown.
This prompted an extensive search of that vicinity which led to two of the suspects being apprehended in an area behind Downtown Cinema Theatre. One of those individuals was identified as Michael Gray Pack, 29, of 217 Rockford St., and the other is a juvenile whose name police did not release due to that person’s age.
During the course of the investigation, the third suspect was identified as Shane Douglas Bowman, 18, of 707 Willow St.
Police announced Wednesday that Pack and Bowman have each been charged with felonious breaking and entering and felony larceny, in addition to contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Juvenile petitions have been issued against the third person involved.
Pack was being held in the Surry County Jail Wednesday under a $5,000 secured bond, while Bowman has been freed from custody after posting a $2,500 secured bond, according to a jail spokesman. Bowman is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on July 19 and Pack on Aug. 23.
Meanwhile, all the property taken during the break-in has been recovered and returned to Ayers Trading Post.
Investigators credit the alertness of witnesses to the crime in calling the police department, along with a quick response by patrol officers, for enabling the suspects to be apprehended.
