The fire department responded to the call at 10:38 p.m. at the facility at 1515 Carter Street. The fire was under control by 10:54 p.m.
According to a press release, the fire was caused by test materials overheating. Estimated damage was $520 to property and $20,000 to contents.
Additional responders to the call were Surry County Emergency Medical Services, Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Mount Airy Police Department, Bannertown Volunteer Fire Department, and Franklin Volunteer Fire Department.
There were no injuries reported with this fire.
