Submissions to the community calendar need to be in writing and arrive or be brought into The Mount Airy News office before 5 p.m. at least five days before the event should appear in the newspaper. Today

n The New River Trail State Park will have a canoeing adventure campout, two days of canoeing and camping down the river. The trip will cover 13 miles of the river. The adventure will start at Foster Falls and end at Allisonia. The event will consist of basic camping and canoeing. There will be hot dog roasting, smore making and pioneer deserts. Learn how to make a campfire without the convenience of modern flames. Bring camping supplies, extra snacks, plenty of water, sun screen, insect repellent, fishing pole and closed toe shoes. n A meeting of the Carroll County, Va., School Board has been scheduled at 7 a.m. on the third floor of the Carroll County Governmental Complex, Hillsville. The purpose of the meeting is to close out the 2009-2010 financial year and any other such business matters the come to the Board. n The Pilot Mountain Area Merchants’ Association meeting will be held at Mountain View Restaurant in Pilot Mountain at 7:30 a.m. All businesses, including retailers, service providers, non-profits and other organizations, are invited to attend. July 2

n LifeSpan will be selling children and adult shirts for $1 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the memory garden.

July 3

n The Fourth of July Children’s Parade will be held at Ridgecrest Retirement Community at 1 p.m. Decorate bikes, trikes and wagons in festive Fourth of July style. Refreshments will be served. Prizes will be awarded for creativity, originality and costume design. For more information and to RSVP, contact the Life Enrichment leader at 786-9100.

n Join the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History at 10 a.m. the first Friday of every month for fun and fantasy as stories related to the museum exhibits are read. Explore history and nature through books, activities and more. This free program is intended for preschool-age children.

n The Copeland Ruritans will be sponsoring a parade at 9:30 a.m. in Downtown Siloam. Line up will be at 9 a.m. at Hardy’s Trucking. There will be floats, bikes and antique cars, entertainment, children’s games, hot dogs, drinks and desserts, a drawing for a homemade quilt made by Siloam Homemakers and a 50/50 cash drawing.

July 4

n The Anderson reunion will be held at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church in Claudville, Va., from 11 a.m. until. All relatives and friends are welcome to attend. Bring a filled basket.

n Mount Airy’s Independence Day Parade will start at 2 p.m. downtown with the reading of the Declaration of Independence and other events. The parade will leave Veterans Park at 3 p.m. A cake cutting and other activities will be held at city hall at 5 p.m., incorporating Mount Airy’s 125th anniversary with the nation’s 234 birthday. There will be music and fireworks at Veterans Park that evening.

n Join the museum for “Celebrate Our Freedom” at 2 p.m. in the courtyard to celebrate freedom on Independence Day with patriotic music, a reading of the Declaration of Independence and free lemonade for everyone. Stay to watch the 4th of July Parade.

n The Carpenter-Goings-Snow reunion will be held at Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church on Haystack Road. Bring a covered dish. Drinks and paper products will be provided. Lunch will begin at 12:30 p.m. For more information, call 320-2582.

July 5

n The Pilot Mountain Tea Party will host a march and rally from 10 a.m. to noon through downtown Pilot Mountain. To participate in the march, meet at East Surry High School at 9:30 a.m. There will be several patriotic speakers at the rally. Afterward, the group will sponsor a family fun day starting at 12:30 p.m. at Mayberry Shazzam with free hot dogs, drinks and games for kids.

July 7

n “Folkways, Fried Pies, and Fiddle Tunes” will take place at Horne Creek Living Historical Farm as part of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources “2nd Saturdays” program. For more information, call Horne Creek at 325-2298.

n The Hillsville VFW will have a dance from 7 to 10 p.m. with music by Sounds Now and Then. Admission is $6 with a drawing for two free tickets for the next dance. 50/50 tickets will be sold with the drawing at break time. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks and other snacks will be sold.

July 12

n The Surry County Genealogical Association will meet at 7 p.m. in the teaching auditorium at Surry Community College in Dobson. This will be a meeting by Jacob Stewart.
