PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Surry Pride Post 142 junior team split a double-header with Reynolds Thursday, dropping the first game 4-3 before holding on to win the second contest, 5-4.

In game one, Reynolds took a 2-1 lead into the bottom half of the fifth when Surry put up two runs headed by some nifty base running from Jeremy Gilley.

Gilley led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second.

After Aaron Eubanks walked, Gilley moved to third on another steal.

Drew Wilson then ripped a two-RBI double to left to put Surry up 3-2 headed into the final two innings.

The Pride’s lead didn’t last long, as Surry gave up two unearned runs in Reynolds’ next at-bat to give the visitors the 4-3 lead and ultimately the win.

A pair of throwing errors gave Reynolds the runs and negated Surry’s earlier rally.

“You’ve got to credit Reynolds with aggressive base running,” Surry coach Chad Freeman said. “We didn’t handle the pressure. We had a chance to get the guys out and we were unable to do it.”

Blake Gilley picked up the loss for Surry. Gilley went just over five and two-thirds innings, gave up two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

At the plate, Drew Wilson was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Jeremy Gilley was 2-for-3 with a run scored, one RBI and three stolen bases..

Surry bounced back in game two, but not before Reynolds but a scare into the Pride in its final at-bat.

Up 2-0 headed into the bottom of the fourth, Surry broke out for three insurance runs, which turned out to be very important.

After Brandon Helvey walked to lead off the inning, Surry’s Marshall Creed and Tanner Lomax put together a pair of singles to make it 4-0. A throwing error from Reynolds moved Creed and Lomax up and a pair of walks brought home the all-important fifth run.

Reynolds would not go quietly after the Surry rally, as a Surry error and a trio of singles set the table for Reynolds’ Will Cox to make it 5-4. But Surry was able to escape after it cut Cox off at second base for the final out of the inning.

Freeman said overall he was pleased with Thursday’s showing which put his team at 9-9 on the season.

“We hit the ball a little better tonight and we came up with some big hits we needed in both games,” he said. “We just had a few errors that ended up costing us. It was definitely disappointing to lose the first game after taking the lead but the guys at least battled and put some runs on the board in the second game and we were able to hold on for the win.”

Surry will close out its season Saturday at home against West Forsyth in a double-header set to start at 1 p.m.
