MOUNT AIRY — Now the day is over for A. Dillard Hiatt who has gone home to be with God. Mr. Hiatt, 73, passed away on June 24, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. He was born in Surry County on Dec. 14, 1936, to the late Alvin Lee Hiatt Sr. and Martha Cook Hiatt. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Lois Hiatt; sisters, Mary Ruth Shaw and Janice Hiatt, and a sister-in-law Perlie Hiatt, all of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews and the loves of his life, Alfred and Lois Hiatt’s grandchildren, Benjamin and Audrey Hiatt, Ethan and Anthony Goins and Malcolm and Anna-Claire Black, all who called him, Uncle D. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hiatt was preceded in death by sisters, Irene Hiatt and Winonia Wilhite; and brothers, Franklin Hiatt and Alvin Hiatt Jr. Mr. Hiatt graduated from Flat Rock High School. He graduated from Gardner-Webb University and High Point University with majors in English and Bible. He taught English and humanities at Trinity High School, where he exposed his students to the performing and fine arts and he taught them how to live. He also taught at Mount Airy High School and Gentry Middle School. He was very active in his church and community throughout his life. Mr. Hiatt and his family wanted to extend their appreciation to former Pastor Todd Byrd and present Associate Pastor Kevin Wilson, Moody Funeral Services, Mountain Valley Hospice, Dr. Sean Harris, Mike Cartledge, PA-C, and all the friends at Chili’s and Pioneer Printing. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Flat Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Todd Byrd.
