DOBSON — Surry Community College is the first community college in North Carolina to participate in the DigitalNC.org yearbook project.

This project entailed converting all of SCC's past yearbooks into a digital format that could be viewed or downloaded via the Internet. All yearbooks were published to the college Web site last Friday and can be accessed at http://surry.edu/library/services/yearbooks.htm. The collection will also be available at http://www.DigitalNC.org sometime this week.

The first yearbook, published in 1968, was called The Trotter but changed to The Lancer in 1969, its title through the last publication in 1995. The project took Alan Unsworth, reference and web services librarian, several months to complete. Each issue had to be scanned page by page.

“Its value is in the reference it can provide to those who are studying genealogy or who want to remember the last name of a fellow student they went to college with,” said Unsworth.

He also pointed out the biggest surprise to him was how well people dressed.

“All men wore ties, even the students,” he said. “They were lookin’ good!”

Another difference he noticed was how many dances, clubs, and general activities people participated in at Surry Community College in the past. Unsworth reasons that the growth of online courses and technology has influenced the way people interact with each other today — not necessarily better or worse, but just different.
