DOBSON — A number of voters across the county have the opportunity today to vote for either Elaine Marshall or Cal Cunningham in the runoff for the Democratic spot in the U.S. Senate race.

The winner of this second primary will run against incumbent Richard Burr in the general election this November. Burr received 1,888 votes out of 2,140 in the Republican primary in Surry County. He ran against three other candidates.

Six candidates ran in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat. The race between Cunningham and Marshall was close in the county, with Cunningham capturing 784 votes and Marshall capturing 731 votes. The total number of Surry County votes cast in that race was 1,861.

According to Susan Jarrell, director of the Surry County Board of Elections, those from Surry County eligible to vote today are Democrats, unaffiliated voters who chose to vote for the Democratic Senate race in May, and unaffiliated voters who did not vote in May. A board of elections employee said yesterday that 25,970 people are eligible to vote today. In the first primary, 10.96 percent of registered Democrats turned out to vote and 0.33 percent nonpartisans. The Republican party saw 12.77 percent turnout.

All 29 precincts are open today for voters. OneStop voting for this race opened on June 3 and ended last Saturday.

State and local boards of election generally post election results on their Web sites as the results come in the night of the election.
