Brandon Lee Baugess, 31, of 1186 Bryant Mill Road, Ararat, was arrested and charged with felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction, which was a sawed-off shotgun; felony possession of a firearm by a felon; felony possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine; felony possession of methamphetamine; felony maintaining a place for a controlled substance; and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to Sheriff Graham Atkinson, deputies learned about Baugess after they were called to Chilton Road last week to respond to a report of shots fired. The caller had a description of a vehicle involved, leading to the stop of Christopher Sean Wolfe, 35, of 719 Crotts Road, Mount Airy. He was charged with driving while license revoked. He told the deputies that there was a weapon and ammunition in the vehicle, and they then located and seized a sawed-off shotgun.
Atkinson said investigators later learned the shotgun belonged to Baugess and that he allegedly had fired the shots. They also learned that Baugess, who is a convicted felon, allegedly had been in possession of another firearm a few days earlier. Based on that information, investigators were able to obtain a search warrant for Baugess’ home.
At the home of Baugess, the officers did not recover any other weapons. They did find ammunition that would not fit the sawed-off shotgun. Methamphetamine also was found in the residence.
Baugess was held in the Surry County Detention Center under a $102,500 secured bond.
