The torrential downpour heard and felt in Surry County last night was persistent throughout the western part of North Carolina as the East Surry softball team in Albemarle and Surry Central baseball team in Forest City felt its effects.

The East Surry (23-6) softball team was set to take on South Stanly (23-5) in the Sectional Round of the NCHSAA 1A West softball championship Friday at 6 p.m. The game was delayed until 6 p.m. today.

If the Cardinals win, they will be going to the state championship in Cary next weekend to defend their 1A state championship title.

East Surry previously beat North Moore Tuesday night 3-0 at home.

Though East Surry and South Stanly are both No. 1 seeds, the Cardinals have to travel because of pre-determined conference seeding priorities.

Surry Central’s 7 p.m. start time for the Sectional Round of the 2A West baseball championship was delayed until 8:30 and results of the game were not available at press time.

Surry Central (20-9) lost to East Rutherford (28-2) Thursday night 7-3 and needed to win in the second game of the series Friday night to keep its season alive.

If Surry Central won, the third game of the series will be today at 7 p.m.

Check tomorrow’s paper for full results from all games.
