The Barry Hall-coached Surry County team has a 2-0 record with a shortened roster.
Surry Central is still competing in the state playoffs, so the Golden Eagles’ additions have yet to added. That meant a 10-man team against Eastern Randolph Saturday night and a 13-man team Sunday against Lexington.
No matter, Surry County was able to handle the adversity.
After Eastern Randolph scored one run in the second inning, Surry County answered in the third with a double by Mount Airy’s Nathan Welch and a single by North Surry’s Taylor Hull.
That was all the offense Surry managed to muster until the eighth inning where it tied the game 2-2 with singles by Eric Kalbflish and East Surry’s Jordan Miller and a run on a wild pitch.
Surry County finally took the lead for good in the ninth inning, scoring two runs, one by Hull and one off an error by the third baseman.
Miller was the winning pitcher for Surry County.
On Sunday night, Surry County traveled to Lexington for a wild baseball game where 29 runs were scored off of 24 hits in 10 innings with Surry County coming out on top 16-13.
Hull went 3-for-6 in that game with six RBIs as the offensive star of the game, but it was really the pitching that gave Surry County the win.
After an offensive explosion from both sides throughout the night, Kyle Shinault shut down Lexington in the tenth inning by striking out the side.
“The young men really played well for us,” Hall said. “We could have a pretty good summer.
“I was proud of these young men the last two nights.”
