The Golden Eagles got in two innings Friday night before the lightening storms that swept the area delayed the game until noon the next day.
Surry Central was up 5-0 on the Wildcats, and that was the final score as the Eagles weren’t able to score Saturday. More importantly, they kept J.C. Draughn from scoring.
“It’s hard to get geared up again, obviously all the momentum that we had last night was gone for today,” Surry Central coach Matt Scott said. “I thought we hit some balls hard today, but then we got into getting outs mode.
“We were more concerned with defense, we just needed outs to win.”
Surry Central got more than enough offense Friday night while rumbling thunder threatened the game from the beginning.
Casey Felts led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk. Shane Johnson followed with a drag bunt single to make it first and second with no outs.
Austin McLamb drove in Felts with a base hit to right field, and Tanner Hudson hit a sacrifice fly to score Johnson.
The next inning, Alex Wilmoth and Andrew Lammone both reached on walks. Wilmoth tried and succeed in stealing third, while J.C. Draughn threw it into the outfield trying to catch him.
Wilmoth took advantage of the miscue and scurried on home for the third run of the game.
“We like to get aggressive on the base paths when we’re up like that,” Scott said.
Felts hit a triple that drove in Lammone, and Johnson drove in the last run of the night before the game was called.
Austin McLamb pitched the Friday part of the game for the Eagles doing what he’s done all season by keeping hitters guessing and making it easy on his defense.
Bradley Lewis got the save by pitching the Saturday part of the game for the Eagles.
“We were pleased with the way they threw, and that our team had only one error,” Scott said. “There was nothing physically the kids could have done better.”
Lewis’ pitching Saturday also kept No. 2 pitcher Luke Harris fresh for Surry Central’s next game Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Owen.
“This was a good game to get the ball rolling in the playoffs and get a good feeling before we have to start playing the ultra talented teams,” Scott said of the Eagles’ first round game. “It is nice to get that win under our belts, and nice to be playing at home next week and it’s nice to have our two horses rested.”
