DOBSON — The Surry Community College Board of Trustees approved a recommendation from the Athletic Council Monday afternoon to maintain the same teams for the 2010-11 academic year with no expansion.

The council also asked that the college remain open to the possibility of having a basketball program if the interest and resources become available again. This applies to either a men’s or a women’s basketball team.

The board deferred a decision on the college’s alcohol usage policy until the June meeting. With the pending opening of the Shelton-Badgett N.C. Center for Viticulture and Enology, the college will potentially have to deal with circumstances in which third party users will want to serve alcohol at functions taking place on the college’s campus. In the policy, the president is responsible for approving the serving of alcohol on campus, but since the board would be ultimately responsible for any events, members wanted the board attorney to take a closer look at the policy before approval.

In other matters:

n Construction is ongoing on the viticulture and enology center. According to Susan Pendergraft, vice president of administrative services, change orders for the project are coming in rapidly as the completion date draws closer.

n The grand opening for the Pilot Mountain Center for Learning, Education and Retraining is set for May 27 at noon. Wiring in the facility is under way and the furniture should be in place by the 25th at the latest. The Elkin CLEAR facility is scheduled to be open for classes the Tuesday following Labor Day. The sign for the center has been added to the shopping center’s marquee.

n A report from the SCC Foundation noted that the group’s annual golf tournament will be May 20 at Cross Creek Country Club. Much of the proceeds from the tournament go towards scholarships for the college. The group has awarded $120,000 in scholarships to 90 students this year.

n A preliminary energy audit was conducted at the college to determine where the college could cut energy costs. The college also has applied for a $200,000 state grant to use for energy-saving measures from which it has not heard back. The board decided to wait for the results of the grant application before taking any further steps.

n The board approved a disclosure of crime statistics policy handed down by the system office which details how the college reports crime statistics.

n The college participated in a best practices listening tour May 4 for members of the system office and for elected officials. The tour visited several community colleges in the state to review best practices. The college highlighted programs in administrative services, corporate and continuing education, curriculum, student development and planning, research and assessment.

n The board recognized Tammy Lawrence Brindle, a student at the college, as the N.C. Community College System Academic Excellence Award Winner. Brindle said she was honored to receive the award and was thankful for having the opportunity the college has provided.

n The board also recognized Brooke Honeycutt, an East Surry High School graduate and SCC student, for being the NJCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week National Award Recipient. This is the first time an SCC student has garnered this honor. Honeycutt has been accepted into the mechanical engineering program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for the fall.
