A two-car collision shut down U.S. 52 at the Worth Street intersection for more than two hours Monday afternoon after the traffic light pole was splintered almost in two.

According to Senior Officer Ryan Bennett of the Mount Airy Police Department, a Chevy TrailBlazer being driven by Dolores Cumberland, 81, of Virginia, struck a gray Toyota Corolla driven by Julia Mitchell, 52, of Elkin. The passenger of the Toyota was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated by members of the Mount Airy Rescue Squad.

“It looks as if Cumberland ran a red light while heading northbound, striking the car. The Corolla was in the southbound turn lane when the accident happened,” Bennett said.

Mitchell and her passenger, whose identity was unknown to Bennett, were taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in urgent, but stable condition, according to John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services. Cumberland was taken to Northern Hospital of Surry County in stable condition.

Bennett said Cumberland was trying to locate a dentist’s office where she had an appointment yesterday afternoon when the accident happened.

The collision sent Cumberland’s SUV into the pole that holds the traffic lights. Traffic had to be rerouted from northbound 52 onto Worth Street and then South Street for about two and a half hours because of the lights which had dropped about three feet. The North Carolina Department of Transportation was called out to fix the pole and the traffic lights.

No charges have been filed in the incident.

Members of the Mount Airy Fire Department, the Mount Airy Rescue Squad, the Mount Airy Police Department, Surry County EMS and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office aided at the scene.
