Local author and historian Tom Perry will be debuting his new book Ararat, Virginia: A Guide From Willis Gap to Kibler Valley at the Ararat Virginia Festival May 22.

This nearly 100-page book will document the many reasons for tourists to visit the community in southwest Patrick County including information on agri-tourism, walking trails, and all the local businesses and organizations. The book tells the history of the community that was home to revered Bob Childress, midwife Orlean Hawks Puckett, and Civil War General J. E. B. Stuart.

Perry has started a scholarship in his parent’s name, which he will donate $1 from the sale of his books at the festival and beyond to a student from the Dan River District of Patrick County. One dollar from the sale of each book at the festival will go to the Dan River Park.

Perry’s parents are Erie M. Perry and Betty Jane Hobbs Perry.

Erie M. Perry was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., and spent his formative years in High Point and Mount Airy. He attended Lees McCrae and Appalachian State University and received a master’s degree from Radford University. He taught in the Patrick County, Va., school system for nearly 30 years at Blue Ridge High School, Red Bank Elementary School, and Blue Ridge Elementary School.

Betty Perry, born outside Augusta, Ga., met her husband while he was stationed in U. S. Army at Fort Gordon. Like several ladies from Georgia she came to Ararat in the late 1950s. She worked for nearly 40 years at Quality Mills/Cross Creek Apparel in Mount Airy.

Perry’s book on Ararat will be available at the festival and from the following Web sites: www.freestateofpatrick.com; https://www.createspace.com/3436283; and http://www.amazon.com/Ararat-Virginia-Thomas-D-Perry/dp/1451518404/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1272973261&sr=8-1
