On Saturday at 3 p.m., Flat Rock Baptist Church will host the annual Surry-Yadkin County Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Service.

This annual memorial service will begin National Police Week in Surry and Yadkin Counties for 2010. This year’s service will include a bridge dedication ceremony by the North Carolina Department of Transportation for the North Carolina Highway 103 Bridge over the Ararat River (East Pine Street) in Mount Airy.

The bridge will be dedicated in memory of fallen Surry County Sheriff’s Deputy James Billups Trevathan, who lost his life during a vehicle stop in the Flat Rock community of Surry County on June 2, 1963.

Flat Rock Baptist Church is at 1335 E. Pine St.

Each May during National Police Week the nation pauses to recognize the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement. National Police Week was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy and a joint resolution of Congress. National Police Week pays special tribute to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Ceremonies are held annually in Washington, D.C., and in communities across the country.

The Surry-Yadkin County Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Service is held annually in remembrance of the eight Surry and Yadkin County law enforcement officers whose lives ended serving the citizens of Surry and Yadkin Counties as members of their sheriff’s departments or the police departments of Mount Airy, Pilot Mountain and Jonesville.

The public is invited.

Should anyone need additional information about the service/ceremony they should contact Chet Jessup at 374-5409.
