The board approved a request to ask for bids from both Dell and HP to furnish 300 laptops for 10 carts at the school system’s four high schools. The laptop carts are the next phase of the roll-out of the 1:1 laptop initiative. The roll-out plan calls for teachers to receive laptops and training one year prior to students receiving them.
The board also discussed the school system’s drug testing policy. The random drug testing program is funded by the Safe and Drug Free School Grant which runs out this year. The board members agreed that they would like to see the random drug testing continue but want to wait until they have a budget before deciding to what scale it will continue. The drug tests cost around $18,000 per year.
After closed session, the board approved a decision to apply for an Innovation in Education grant along with Stokes County and the Virginia counties of Carroll, Patrick and Grayson. The grant would be for start-up funds for an education foundation for post-secondary education, support in high schools, colleges and career readiness, GED programs and with the transition to high school and post-secondary education. It also may go towards funding math and science coaches. According to Dr. Terri Mosley, assistant superintendent, it would be mainly a career-readiness initiative.
Brenda Whitaker, federal programs director, also asked the board to approve an application for a Title III grant. Title III funding is supplementary and is used mainly for professional development and a literacy focus in highly concentrated areas for teachers of English as a Second Language and Limited English Proficient students. The grant totals $96,068.
“It’s imperative we do staff development that reaches the content area teachers as well,” said Whitaker.
